A growing number of patients fall into a gap between those who can be seen by their routine pediatrician and those who require emergent care, a gap of patients with "urgent acute care needs”. With the differentiation of the sick and less sick comes a blurring of these lines and a necessary challenge to appropriately triage and treat these acute care patients. With these challenges in this emerging field comes a need for all of us to continue to refresh our knowledge base and continue to develop our clinical skills.

In pursuit of this goal, we will be launching an interdisciplinary “Hot Topic in Acute Care and Management” case of the week.  The goal of this series will be to provide educational pearls to foster interprofessional discussion and enhance our ability to care for this growing population of sick but generally well-appearing patients.
